Mr Oil County Championships Day 2, 2022

On a sunny Sunday in May, the cream of Wexford juvenile athletes gathered in Enniscorthy for the first day of the track and field Mr. Oil county juvenile championships 2022. Menapians showed up in great numbers to take part in the various events, with a big support crew to bask in the sunshine and soak up the atmosphere of the day while doing the club proud shouting for the club’s competitors.

Kicking off in the field events was Under 9’s Conor Donovan with a brilliant first competitive event in the Long Jump. Another great First for Lilly Rowe Steele (Under 10) for the Turbo Javelin. Lily also competed admirably in the 100m sprint and the 500m Middle Distance.

In Under 11s, both Amy Conde and Abbie Donovan ran super races in the 100m sprint, well done girls.

The club’s sole Under 12s representative, Zaira May Healy, competed very well in the 100m sprint coming 4th in her heat to make the final, which also booked her a place in the County Relay trials. Zaira scooped bronze in the High Jump also.

Our Under 13s athletes completed nine events in total amongst the three club representatives. Jack Kinsella ran very well in the 100m sprint, as well as the Long Jump and Javelin. Rory Henderson booked himself a place in the final having come third in his heat in the 100m sprint, Rory also participated in Javelin, Long Jump and the 600m Middle Distance race. Lily Siggins got through to the 100m semi final having come 3rd in her heat, and competed well in shot put and 600m Middle distance.

The Menapians Under 14s crew turned out in great numbers on the day. Josh Nolan started with a fourth place finish in the 100m sprint, then went on to win bronze in the Javelin, before taking part in the High Jump. Training pals Orla Dolan and Maebh McCormack competed in the 100m sprint where Maebh made the final, High Jump with Maebh winning bronze, and Javelin. Maeve White also ran well to make the 100m final and competed in the Javelin.

Also in Under 14s, Elijah Paige-Redmond brought home a stash of gold medals with wins in the 100m sprint, Javelin, Shot Put and High Jump, while his brother Lucas, under 16, also scooped gold in his 100m sprint race, silver in Javelin and silver in Long Jump, making seven county medals travelling home in the one car!

Consistent training in the full spectrum of events is really paying off for the Menapians Juvenile athletes.

Thanks to the club’s officials on the day – Catherine, Padraig, Helen and Sinead. Also thanks to coaches Ellen, Tracey, Louise, Tadhg for helping on the day, and to all the other coaches for their work through the year to get the athletes to the start line.

Next Sunday sees day 3 of the Mr Oil county juvenile championships, let’s see if we can turn out in numbers again!
